The US Senate approved a bill on military assistance to Ukraine – Meduza

The US Senate has approved the allocation of additional financial assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan in the amount of more than $95 billion, CNN reports. Almost 61 billion of this amount is intended to help Ukraine.

The package was supported by 79 senators, 18 voted against. Now, for this decision to come into force, only the signature of US President Joe Biden is needed. The President himself https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1782958511334330493, which will do this on April 24th. “I will sign this law as soon as it reaches my desk to begin sending weapons to Ukraine this week,” the president said.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky thanked the senators for their decision. “This vote strengthens America’s role as a beacon of democracy and leader of the free world,” Zelensky said. He also noted that he looks forward to Biden signing the bill and passing the next military aid package.

“Ukraine’s long-range weapons, artillery and air defense are extremely important tools for the speedy restoration of a just world,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.

The approved package also includes a fourth document concerning the use of frozen Russian assets, blocking of TikTok and the introduction of new sanctions.

Since the fall of 2023, the US Congress has been unable to agree on the allocation of funds for Ukraine due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats. The military aid package for Kyiv was part of a single US national security bill.

In April, instead of one bill, separate bills on assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as well as a bill on US national security, were introduced. On April 20, these documents were approved by the lower house of Congress.
