The Russian government supported the proposal to increase the maximum criminal liability for sabotage crimes (Article 281-281.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) from 30 to 35 years in prison, said the head of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption Vasily Piskarev on Wednesday, April 24.

According to him, the corresponding amendments to the criminal code of the Russian Federation have already been prepared by him together with his colleagues and will be introduced “in the near future.” According to the relevant article of the Criminal Code, it is proposed to increase the maximum penalty from 30 to 35 years in prison. The deputy did not say what other changes are proposed to be made to these articles of the Criminal Code.

The deputy explained the need for amendments due to “increased sabotage activity”

In addition, it is proposed to increase liability for the intentional destruction or damage of property committed on the grounds of political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred or enmity (Part 2 of Article 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The maximum penalty under this article is now 5 years in prison.

“These amendments are important for strengthening security in the context of a special operation (war in Ukraine. – Ed.) and increased sabotage activity of the enemy. The government supported them. We will introduce it in the near future,” Piskarev wrote.
