Spectators will see three performances staged by director Oleg Zhyugzhda.
In Nizhny Novgorod, on the stage of the academic puppet theater from April 30 to May 2, the international tour of the Grodno Regional Puppet Theater from Belarus will take place for the first time. The director of all performances presented during the tour is Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus Oleg Zhyugzhda, the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported.
“We are happy that our theater for the first time had the opportunity to host world-famous colleagues. The Grodno Regional Puppet Theater has a long history; it works with diverse puppets; its productions are distinguished by the synthesis of puppet systems and strong directorial work. Therefore, during the preparation of the tour, we set ourselves the task of showing performances that are new to our audience, which are not in our repertoire today. Thus, the Nizhny Novgorod audience will be one of the first in Russia to see the latest productions of the Grodno Puppet Theater, including the 2023 premiere of “A Secluded House on Vasilyevsky”, based on the works of A.S. Pushkin. This is especially significant in the anniversary year of the writer’s birth,” said Alla Zabegalova, director of the Nizhny Novgorod Puppet Theater.
The Grodno Regional Puppet Theater will bring three performances by chief director Oleg Zhyugzhda to Nizhny Novgorod. Thus, on April 30 at 11:00 and 17:00 there will be screenings of a comedy play based on the Russian folk tale “The Frog Princess” (6+).
On May 1 at 15:00 and 19:00, Nizhny Novgorod spectators will see the premiere production of the Grodno Puppet Theater – “A Secluded House on Vasilyevsky” (18+). It is based on a fantastic story by the writer and official Vladimir Titov, based on the plot of Alexander Pushkin with his permission. With this production, the masters of the Belarusian school of puppeteering are ready to surprise adult viewers.
The premiere performance of “The Adventures of the Rhinoceros Beetle” (6+) based on the work of Konstantin Paustovsky – on May 2 at 11:00 and 13:30 – will end the tour program of the Grodno Regional Puppet Theater in Nizhny Novgorod. This is a story about how sometimes faith can work miracles. A fairy tale by Konstantin Paustovsky is about the last war, about a soldier who went to the front.
And from November 8 to 10, the Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Puppet Theater will visit Grodno with a return tour. On the stage of the Grodno Regional Puppet Theater, our artists will show three performances from their repertoire.

Grodno Puppet Theater opened in 1940, then it closed due to the beginning of the German occupation and was reopened in the summer of 1946 as an amateur theater, but a year later it was transformed into a professional group – the regional puppet theater.
The theater was officially created in 1980 by decision of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee. The troupe was formed from graduates of the Belarusian State Theater and Art Institute, the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema. N. Cherkasov and graduates of the Grodno College of Culture.
The Grodno Regional Puppet Theater successfully toured all over the world: in Russia, Poland, Croatia, France, Germany, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and other countries.
Director Oleg Zhyugzhda – Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, winner of the Francis Skorina Medal, as well as the Crystal Angel prize of the Belarusian Union of Theater Workers – “For contribution to the development of the Belarusian puppet theater.” Laureate and diploma winner of international festivals, as well as a two-time nominee for the Russian theater award “Golden Mask”. His directorial works are present in the repertoire of many puppet theaters in Russia.
