The authors of the new film adaptation of The Master and Margarita, who left Russia, will not receive royalties from the film’s distribution. Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova announced this at a meeting with participants in the script support program.

“Because of one person who left our country and wrote some posts, we should not leave the audience without a film, and the entire team without their brainchild. There is another important point – no money received at the box office, no one those who left do not receive it,” TASS quotes Lyubimova as saying.

She added that about 200 people worked on the creation of the picture. With a budget of one billion rubles, box office receipts for The Master and Margarita exceeded 2.3 billion rubles by mid-April.

The main roles in the film were played by Evgeny Tsyganov, Yulia Snigir and German actor August Diehl. Director Mikhail Lokshin, who lives in the USA, spoke out against the war in Ukraine. He became the target of criticism from pro-government activists and propagandists. Among other things, they demanded that the Cinema Fund be punished for financing Lokshin’s project.
