The Russian research vessel “Akademik B. Petrov” caused a stir in Norway. Some hotheads wrote down the ship built in 1984 as “Russian spies”.

The reason for the alarm was the fact that the “Akademik B. Petrov” passed by the Norwegian oil and gas fields.

“We confirm that a southbound Russian vessel passed the Yoa platform on Wednesday morning.” Akademik B. Petrov passed about four nautical miles from the platform,” said a representative of the platform operator Neptune Energy.

The researcher Stule Ulriksen from the Norwegian Naval Academy recorded the ship as a spy.

“It [«Академик Б.Петров»] registered as a research vessel, but functions as a spy ship. And it should keep track of what we are doing, ”Ulriksen said.

He adds that many Russian ships have names that include the words “Akademik” or “mechanic”. These ships often pass close to important bases or other facilities.

Ulriksen also noted the abundance of antennas and other equipment on the research vessel and remarked that this made it more suitable “for missions other than purely research,” writes NRK.
